THE POSITION

The Contra Costa County Animal Services Department is currently recruiting motivated individuals interested in becoming part of a team of dedicated workers in the animal shelter, feeding and caring for animals. This is an excellent opportunity to join one of the most outstanding and innovative Animal Services agencies in the State. Typical tasks performed by an Animal Center Technician include maintaining the kennels in a clean and sanitary manner; feeding and caring for impounded animals; assisting the veterinary staff in the treatment of sick or injured animals; and assisting the public in claiming or obtaining animals.
 
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of providing excellent customer service, proper handling of various types of animals, and the ability to adapt to varying tasks and priorities. Sound physical condition, strength and agility are essential to this position.

TYPICAL TASKS
  • Impound animals brought to the Shelter by the public
  • Feed and care for impounded animals including reptiles, livestock, and exotic animals
  • Create or update animal records using the computer for impounded animals, including breed, size, weight, color, and photos for the department's website
  • Maintain Shelter following established protocols and using prescribed materials which may include mixing chemicals, following Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information, and ensure the health and safety of the public, staff, and animals
  • Maintain written and computer records of equipment and supplies for cleaning, feeding, and treatment of animals
  • Perform euthanasia
  • Identify symptoms of animal disease including rabies, parvo, ringworm, and other common ailments
  • Assist Veterinarians in providing health care to animals held at the Animal Shelter including micro-chipping, treatments, and vaccinations
  • Keep animal kennels, corrals, holding facilities and other areas of the Animal Control Center clean and orderly by using prescribed materials and following accepted methods
  • Direct Animal Shelter visitors to appropriate staff
  • Assist Shelter visitors with claiming and obtaining animals
  • Assist in opening and closing center facilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of State valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License will be accepted during the application process.
 
Education: Possession of high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate.
 
Certification: Appointees must successfully complete an initial period of training conducted by a licensed Veterinarian in the proper technique of humane euthanasia within nine (9) months of hire.
 
Background Requirements: Must be able to successfully pass a thorough background investigation.
