Communications Assistant

POSITION DESCRIPTION – Columbus Recreation and Parks Department Position Title:  Communications Assistant Reports to:  Community Relations Direct Reports:            Communications and Marketing Managers CLASSIFICATION:  Part-Time Employee 
 
POSITION SUMMARY: Communications Assistant Part-Time Position - Columbus, Ohio
 
The City of Columbus, Recreation and Parks Department is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and professional individual to assist the Communications and Marketing team. 
 
The part-time Communications Assistant will act as the primary social media specialist for the department, creating and executing day-to-day social media campaigns as well as developing sophisticated strategies for special initiatives and events. This individual will partner with colleagues in the department and across the organization to ensure that audience engagement and department messaging align with and support department goals. This individual must be social media savvy and have strong writing and photography skills. 
 
MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Social Media Coordinator  Creates content and schedules social media posts for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram  Works with department colleagues to develop social strategy and performance goals  Continually looks for ways to help the department better reach and engage with our audiences  Increases the number of followers on all of the department’s social media accounts  Leads planning for measurement, evaluation, and reporting plans for campaigns  Tracks social media metrics, trends and best practices  Provides weekly updates, as well as monthly and quarterly reports 
 
Other Duties  Identifies opportunities to expand digital marketing efforts to help achieve department goals  Represents Communications and Marketing team in cross-departmental work groups  Supports Communications and Marketing team in working with media for outreach, events and activities as needed  Writes press releases and media advisories in AP Style as needed
 
QUALIFICATIONS  Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or related field  Experience in creating content for social media platforms, specifically Facebook, Twitter and Instagram  Strong writing and photography skills for social media  Possess the ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments  Responsible, able to follow-through with assigned tasks and take initiative without being asked  Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, members of the media and the public  Commitment to customer service  Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary  Detail-oriented self-starter with excellent organization, writing and editing skills  Efficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint 
 
Graphic design experience is helpful but not required (Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign)
