Computer Engineer, AST, Data Systems

Summary

Serves as a Computer Engineer in the Cognitive Signal Processing Branch, responsible for supporting the designing, developing, installing, testing, or the evaluation of data handling of computing systems for aerospace, aeronautical, space science and/or earth science vehicles. This includes spacecraft or instruments, support equipment or experiment systems (involving both the hardware/software) and data systems for acquiring, reducing, and computing data to meet end-to-end data systems needs.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a computer engineer, performs a combination of duties as determined by management and organizational needs.
  • Supports the design and development of software and/or hardware subsystems that are applicable to communications and networking systems, both aeronautical and space.
  • Supports the design and development of signal processing waveforms, machine learning, artificial intelligence technology applications involving state-of-the-art development tools to meet specific mission requirements.
  • Adapts methodologies, tools and technologies for problem resolution. Performs algorithm development, data acquisition, and computation towards the selection of cognitive algorithms for aerospace applications.
  • Collaborates with a team comprised of experienced engineers to meet work milestones necessary for project deliverables.
  • Computer engineering work involves the application of engineering and scientific theories and principles for complex computer-based systems.

Conditions of Employment

  • A one-year probationary period may be required
  • Position subject to pre-employment background investigation
  • This is an Accelerated Training Program (ATP) position eligible for a promotion in six months upon completion of the program requirements for the GS-09.


Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To Qualify for the GS-09:

Have one year of professional, directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the
Federal service applying knowledge of software and/or hardware subsystems that are applicable to communications and networking systems, both aeronautical and space OR applying knowledge of signal processing waveforms and communications systems.

OR

Completed all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree in an appropriate field

OR

Completed 2 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field

OR

Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed above.

To Qualify for the GS-11:

One year of specialized experience is defined as professional experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service supporting the design and development of software and/or hardware subsystems that are applicable to communications and networking systems; experience supporting the development of signal processing waveforms, machine learning, artificial intelligence technology applications using development tools.

OR

Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field

OR

Completion of 3 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field

OR

Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed above.

Education

In order to qualify for this position you must meet Basic Education Requirement

Applicants must have successfully completed a graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, Other fields of science. Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of undergraduate or graduate education only: Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Optical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering. Other majors will qualify if the major includes or is supplemented as follows: Astronautics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science*, Computer Engineering, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Metallurgy, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics (or other related field), if includes or is supplemented by 12 semester hours (or the equivalent) in appropriate physical science or engineering courses.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

All degree(s) must have been awarded from colleges or universities that are accredited by recognized accrediting organizations. All degrees must have been received in the year of, or any year subsequent to the original date of accreditation.
