R&D Computer Science (Early Career)

What Your Job Will Be Like
We are looking for a highly motivated R&D Software Surety Engineer (SwSE) to assist R&D project teams in successful product qualification and delivery. This Software Surety Engineer (SwSE), would provide R&D contributions throughout the entire product realization lifecycle including monitoring every phase of the development process to ensure software product design, development, and verification activities delivers an assured software product that meets its requirements safely and reliably. Activities include research, development, verification & validation, risk analysis, crucial technical documentation, deployment and in-depth life cycle support of scientific and engineering software, related tools, and associated hardware to deliver a wide range of digital product.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Apply technical judgment and software engineering principles to recognize problems, develop requirements, monitor and support design/development methods, and deliver qualified, accepted digital product.
  • Lead R&D teams in identifying and transforming unknown technical challenges into known technical risks to ensure and improve the safety, security, and reliability of the product.
  • Implement tools and processes to enable improved Software Surety Engineering (e.g. write Scripts, setup Build Servers, automate tracing of requirements to test).
  • Author software product artifacts capturing analyses, requirements traceability reports, verification/validation test cases, qualification and SQA plans, and essential engineering authorizations that ensure the product fully meets its requirements and design intent.
Qualifications We Require
  • Bachelor’s and Advanced (Master’s or PhD) degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other relevant field
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance
Qualifications We Desire
  • Computer programming languages such as Java, C/C++, C#, VHDL, Python, Ruby, Swift, Objective-C, Matlab, Labview
  • Using databases, such as NoSQL, Mongo, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, sqllite, and Excel
  • Using software configuration management tools (Confluence, Git, etc.)
  • Using multiple operating systems such as Linux, Windows, Android, Macintosh, iOS, etc.
  • Designing and qualifying software, firmware, programmable logic, and parent product
  • Understands or has experience working in an Agile Development environment
  • Experience as a Scrum Master (or ability to function/operate as a scrum master)
  • Technical and failure analysis acumen, including SPC, FMEA, RCA, HALT/HASS, Mistake Proofing, Design of Experiments, and Fagan Inspections

The Surety Engineering group (9420) is a center of excellence for research and development (R&D) Technical Quality at Sandia National Laboratories. With multidisciplinary engineers at numerous sites, 9420 provides R&D hardware and software quality and systems engineering expertise throughout the entire product realization lifecycle, as well as trains fellow scientists and engineers in defect prevention strategies and graded approaches to product qualification. We deliver strong technical solutions that increase customer confidence against loss, damage, and errors by minimizing a product’s risk through the prevention, early detection, and mitigation of defects. Our engineers play an important role in R&D project teams responsible for realizing high-consequence products, providing customized engineering support that ensures the appropriate qualification and testing evidence meets design requirements in a predictable, timely, and consistent manner.

Security Clearance
