US Government Affairs Intern

This role has the potential to be quite impactful on the company. An example from 2020 is how working with the rest of the chemical industry allowed Lubrizol to be seen as an essential business. That meant that we were allowed to keep our plants open and supply chain running when many businesses were forced to close. In addition to the benefit to Lubrizol, we were able to help combat COVID-19 by providing our products which help keep transportation moving, power being generated, people and objects sanitized, and medical procedures completed.
 
Summary of Responsibilities               
 
  • Understands the strategy and key objectives for the Lubrizol Sustainability Organization’s Government Relations team;
  • Supports the development of relationships with US legislative stakeholders;
  • Supports the development of Lubrizol positions on key policy issues impacting Lubrizol in the US  
  • Contributes to Lubrizol’s working knowledge of US federal and state legislative and regulatory developments that may impact Lubrizol and/or business units;
  • Coordinates with Corporate Communications Team to positively represent Lubrizol and its business units in US government relationship building and advocacy
 
Essential Job Functions  
 
  • Provide support for the implementation of processes to build relationships with federal and state lawmakers who represent states and districts where Lubrizol conducts operations;
  • Engage with key trade associations to schedule and prepare all parties for 1:1 meetings and calls with lawmakers
  • Gather, update and leverage key facts and information for Lubrizol’s activities at US sites
  • Prepare pre meet information for Lubrizol and lawmakers in advance of meetings  
  • Initiate and drive processes to gather and maintain information regarding regulatory and legislative progress and developments that could impact Lubrizol, its businesses, suppliers and customers 
  • Research and follow key legislation in federal and state governements
  • Provide regular updates on developments to Director of GA  
  • Assist in the implementation of advocacy strategies to proactively address key legislative proposals to create opportunity and manage risk for Lubrizol and its businesses.
  • Communicate with trade associations to understand advocacy strategies and how they may impact Lubrizol or its businesses
  • Participate in development of Lubrizol position and advocacy on key policy issues. 
 
Skills, Qualifications, Experience Requirements:
  • Demonstrated understanding of and interest in the legislative process in the US federal and state governments
  • Participation in or completion of four year degree in political science, history, philosophy or related majors  
  • Strong research, communication and presentation skills
  • Collaborative team management and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills demonstrated in attention to details and organization to meet deadlines
  • Work effectively with diverse team members to address complex problems and implement solutions
